My recent inspiration derives from these two individuals: Adam Lambert and the Gaga.

After the Gag's Bad Romance music video I can confidently say that I respect her. She is self made and that alone is a pretty good reason to respect her for. Yes, she has a multimillionaire of a father-- who could have easily "made her big", but she did it by playing shows at local clubs in New York. Also, the Gaga was 1 of the 20 people to get early admissions into TISCH and went there since the age of 13. Impressive.

Lady GaGa: (on how she became a famous artist) I did this the way you are supposed to. I played every club in New York City and I bombed in every club and then killed it in every club and I found myself as an artist. I learned how to survive as an artist, get real, and how to fail and then figure out who I was as singer and performer. And, I worked hard.

Before her fame, she had even written songs for other artists such as the pussycat dolls and some guy from new kids on the block.

In case it wasn't a given, her style is ludacris-- in the best way possible. I feel that she bridges the gap between high fashion couture and real life. She's somewhere in between. She makes couture wearable. Maybe not practical, but wearable.

Adam on the other hand is just overall flawless. He is beautiful and hits the nail on the head when it comes to rock god. He is the perfect balance of rockstar, fetish, gay, and talented. Can we just bask for a second?

Overall, I view these two as innovators to todays music and performances. They definitely know how to push the boundaries and do it well.

Here is an article I wrote for the school newspaper:

You’re baking some cookies for tomorrow’s club meeting. Measuring the flour, butter, eggs, and those yummy chocolate chips, you know these are going to be one heck of a batch of cookies. Why? You measured everything accurately and so far, they are turning out just right. At 375 degrees they are turning a nice golden brown in the oven—success.

This instance almost seems “dummy proof”. Let’s face it, you grabbed your “Baking Made Easy” cookbook, whisked a few ingredients in a bowl, followed a direct path of instructions and accomplished the “success” of the mouth watering chewy chocolate chunk cookies you had originally hoped for.

Certain people may refer to success as a “recipe” as there are select ingredients one must possess and a series of instructions you have to follow to accomplish your goal. But what if achieving this sense of accomplishment does not have a particular path to follow? This is why I believe success is an immeasurable quality. There are too many individuals—both students and adults, that have yet to determine this. What do you believe success is? The 98% you got on your English essay? The number of expensive cars you own in the driveway? What about the connections you have? Everyone views their accomplishments differently.

Accomplishments and all aside, there is one ingredient that can’t exactly be measured. To me, this is happiness. Many students whisk themselves around like zombies from class to class never truly acknowledging who they are, what they live for, or even the small things that occur in their day to day routine. People are busy. People have work to do. People have serious duties to complete. That is inevitable.

Stress, believe it or not, is another factor which often goes hand in hand with success. Generally, “being busy”, “working hard”, and “completing serious things” usually leads to greater opportunities and maybe this is your version of accomplishment. But let me ask you this: do you put yourself through crazy amounts of stress all for the final goal of “being successful”? If so, I think we need to reconsider what we are living to achieve and living to feel. Do you want to wake up in the morning and worry about the cornucopia of tedious tasks you have to complete simply in hopes of going to a “good university” or getting a “good job”? What about the fact that you hate the courses you are taking. Is it worth spending days on end doing something that you don’t like? In my opinion it’s important to embrace your passions, in fact, you should pursue them. The idea of starting your day with a positive attitude, people you adore and your favorite thing in the world is my personal recipe for success.

Furthermore, perhaps it’s appropriate to state the obvious and cliché quotation here: “it’s the journey rather than the destination”. As the grade seven you, perhaps you couldn’t wait to be in grade twelve—you could finally graduate and blow this pop stand, otherwise known as the Bishop Strachan School. However, as a grade twelve student it’s about the years which you experienced up until that point rather than the grad tie you get to wear. One thing I’ll never forget is when peer Lia Pon once told me in our grade eight years: “memories are memories good or bad”. That saying is relevant to me on the account of I believe it to be true. Whether you have an unflattering photo posted of you on facebook or make a really embarrassing joke, we should embrace all moments “both good and bad”.

To achieve “success” you can’t just type your destination into the GPS system in your car. Although some people’s version of success is easier to attain than others, we all have to experience the “journey” to get there, even infamous Miley Cyrus refers to this moment as “the climb”. I say, as long or short lived this “climb” may be, we might as well have one heck of a time doing it. Embrace your high school years, enjoy your company, and do the things you love. You never know, you may just feel successful doing it.

Dirty Dirty Streetpunks and the R-word

Dirty street punks, the colour black, smoking, and heavy metal is a small representation of the plethora of things that pop into my-yead whenever I hear the term “rebel”. I think; rebellious teenager who skips school to get stoned, gets a piercing only her friends know about, and never gets home on time for her 1:00am curfew. I rarely hear prestigious Bishop Strachan School girls getting labeled with this term by one another unless it’s purely sarcastic:

You’re wearing your skirt FOUR inches above your knee? R-E-B-E-L.

Reflecting on the class of 2010… there really isn’t a reason to use the r-word. You want to know why-- because there are no freaking rebels in our grade. None! Hard to believe huh? In my opinion there is no one who would ever disobey the BSS “laws” on purpose or “break the mold” for lack of a better term. Too many goodie goodies. If there was a rule implemented that no one liked, we would suck it up and abide. Why? Why is everyone afraid of sticking their necks out from the crowd? Getting noticed? Causing scene! Sometimes you need to break the rules. Stir up the pot. Rain on the parade.

Where are all the trouble makers? Oh, they left? Well that sucks. I miss the stories of hearing Sully have to tell people to dye their hair back, hide their piercings, wear their socks on their feet (ie not arm warmers Tasha), and hunt people down for enjoying a latte in the vill-uge.

Maybe BSS doesn’t want no trouble, but life is boring without controversy! If you got kicked out of the Bish for being high 24/7, refusing to rock the sailor suit, breaking a silly rule, or just not wanting to conform, I only ask one thing of you, please come back and visit-- because man oh man, do we need you back.

I’m sure most of this recognize this infamous quote from the YouTube video viewed over 100 million times featuring Charlie biting his older brother. If you have not had the pleasure of viewing this incident click here.

Okay, so maybe I made that up... but for the most part, I do not find babies comical, silly, or “lol-worthy”. Regardless of what the baby is doing… this includes burping, sleeping, eating, saying a funny word, so on and so fourth-- no “lols” for the babies. However, that all seemed to change when I encountered this website: http://iwanttobeababy.com/. If the name didn’t already imply it, the site features grown men and women who, for lack of better words, want to be a baby. Males and females who simply want to return to their youth... relive their childhood if you will.

I find the following videos hilarious on two accounts. Firstly, it’s not something that happens every day and secondly, its plain old ridiculous. These two videos showcase a man doing two very adult things… baby style.

Was anyone aware that Vitamin water is now available in 10 calorie servings (20 per bottle)?

I was hesitant to purchase this new beverage at first as I thought it may taste like aspartame. However, much to my surprise there was no aspartame in the product. The Multi-V Lemonade flavor slightly even resembled a Starbucks green tea lemonade. No wonder they want you to drink "multi-bottles". If they sold it in Canada, I would too!

PS. They also sell Guava flavor here, it's a rare find back home.

Washington D.C!

Okay okay, so traveling with the fam jam isn't exactly ideal.

However, if it means getting to live in luxury (rather than on a student budget where your $2.00 allowance buys you nothing) I am far from complaining.

I am currently situated at the AKA: White House.

It's located near the White House (hence the name) and is a mix between a pent house in a hotel and an apartment. Did I mention its a fraction of the cost? I will post photos soon because it really is that stellar.

My first time actually using photobooth was right now... things turned out like this:

Some great things about Washington D.C:

SUPER clean buildings. Pristine grounds. Manicured lawns.

Over 100 museums. All free.

Frivolous Work

According to society’s standards we have pegged the words ‘work’ and ‘play’ as polar opposites. Work is serious, time consuming, boring and meant for adults. On the other hand, play is a child word. It implies silly time killing games and frivolous play. Why? Why is there a great divide between these things? Is it not possible for work to be enjoyable and… fun? Why can’t work be entertaining? Generally, if one is laughing or having a good time at work people don’t think they are serious. Nobody wants to be labeled as the “slacker” or someone who doesn’t take their J-O-B seriously. This means that people must become robotic and "work" if they want their boss to like them.

Recently I have discovered a little thing called art school. Blending my passion and hobby together with “school” I have found a way to incorporate my version of work and play. I am perusing this notion and hopefully I will end up at my dream school: Parsons.

I think we all underestimate the greatness of Ozzy Osbourne.

Does anyone watch the Osbournes these days? Not going to lie, I purchased season two before I came to BC for five whole dollars. Worth every penny. There is one episode in season 2 where Ozzy yells swear words at the Ocean tide for ruining the fire he built 2cm away. Minutes later he decides to go fishing after getting angry that his feet got wet. Booking it into his million dollar beach house he grabs some cheese (because fish enjoy cheese?) and BOLTS into the restless ocean clothes and all. Drenched in salt water, he complains that he didn't catch a fish and is unhappy.

Our neighbor introduced himself to Anna and I today. He works in marketing, he's a pretty cool guy. He's lived in his appartment next door for 10-ish years and has a spectacular view. He really spruced up his place with art and earth colours that make you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. However, when he offered to take Anna and I to sushi, we weren't so into it. Keep in mind he's like 30... and lives with a Russian room mate whos pissed because she needs to get $2,000 tooth surgery.

Can we just take a second to acknowledge that this is in Canada?! Being in British Colombia really makes me stop and appreciate that I am Canadian.

Living by ourselves is quite wonderful. I've truly surprised myself in terms of cooking meals ect. Last nights salmon feast was ohsogood.

I have officially moved in with Spids...

This is our home for the next month.

Anna and I had quite the day today. We purchased all $300.00 worth of our art supplies, looked around Emily Carr, walked for hours (literally 5 hours), stopped to listen to some jazz, ate some mouth watering sashimi, cooked our own stir fry in our WOK mother fathers, oh, and bought sweet mountain bikes. That's right, we purchased 2 sweet rides.

Looks like tomorrow we will be hitting up the beach.

...Cycling around, perhaps visiting the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Babies and Prison

Oh hi there, my name is Emily Kalatzis. I am a quiet, academic, self-righteous goody two shoes who can’t seem to stop talking, loves creating things, and lives on the edge.

I used to have a blog back in time; back in time when frosted makeup, S Club Seven, and Xanga.com was “cool”. Most of my Asian friends used it and I was all over that band wagon. I updated every day and was loyal to my little Xanga account… until facebook rolled around that is. Writing notes like crazy I gained a mini following. I posted my rants, crazy-ass theories, and reviews on events. I suppose people liked reading my ideas.

So what happened in between now and then? School, commitments, Prism (The BSS yearbook)-- which is FINALLY come to an end. It has been one year, a solid and jam packed year and its FINALLY over. Truly, I never could see the end in sight…but it came, it actually came. Although I can’t reveal the theme of the book, I can say this: it is like my baby. It’s beautiful, has meaning, takes a different approach from previous yearbooks, and is visually appealing. When it comes out in the third week of September you’ll see what I mean.

Next month (July) is going to be insane. In fact, all of next year is going to be insane. Firstly, I am headed to Emily Carr Art University in British Colombia with my best friend Anna Speyer, to live on our own in BC and do art every day. Could life get any sweeter? There are so many DIY’s I would like to create and so many things I want to discover. With Prism (the yearbook) there was ALWAYS something to do. Now that it’s summer, it is so refreshing to sit down and think “there are absolutely no commitments I have to fill”. I am free from “prison” and the world is a basket of art supplies for the taking.

There are still so many things to write, make, and do. I just have to get to them. Until then, keep checking my blog because I will update as much as possible… or whenever I have something interesting to say…
